Practical Blacksmithing and Metalworking

Blacksmithing and metalworking can be easier than you would imagine. This book shows you how - with some patience and a working knowledge of metals, tools, and techniques - blacksmithing can be a rewarding, inexpensive hobby. Using simple instructions and first-rate, detailed illustrations Blandford makes it easy for the novice to learn this craft, while offering project variations complex enough to challenge even the experienced blacksmith or metalworker.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Packed with useful information
This fine reference is divided into two sections.

In the Section 1, Mr. Blandford begins with the basics, providing us with information on iron and steel, forges and anvils, the tools of a blacksmith. There is thorough narrative on basic techniques, such as cutting, bending, drawing out, upsetting, twisting, welding, heat treatment, and case hardening, followed by a chapter on advanced processes: making chain, making nails, rivets, and welds. There is much emphasis on making tools, and this is a very importatn skill. All the primary tools are covered: hammers, tongs, punches, spikes, knives, sets, fullers, swages and much more.

Section 2 covers much general information regarding metals, measurement, and other common metal-crafting procedures.

This book is jam-packed with all the knowledge you need, and well-illustrated with line-drawings and black & white photos. Its truly among the best bargains for your metal-shop needs.

4 Stars Pretty good
But still not as good as Sims “Backyard Blacksmith” A few more pictures would have made this book a five star.

5 Stars Excellent book
Mr. Blanford Writes of experience. He makes you feel welcome in the world of the blacksmith. Is on my must read book list for my students.

5 Stars Percy W BLANDFORD: Practical Blacksmithing and Metalworking
As a beginner blacksmith with a professional engineering background I bought previously Alexander G Weygers: “The Complete Modern Blacksmith” largely because it had many “excellent” reviews. However, Blandford wins on most points. I have found Blandford very helpful on specific details, on leading me through principles and methods, with much clearer illustations properly referenced in the text, and with a wider scope of nedded information. In contrast Blandford has much better information on welding, and detail on forges and on aprons and is far better indexed. I have learned a lot from both books, but if I had to choose one it would be Blandford.

4 Stars General Introduction…Worth Owning
Percy Blandford writes on a lot of shop craft topics and has clearly thought about them a lot. He writes well. This is a general introduction to metalwork primarily from a smithing perspective…that is, carbon steel work. It touches on other areas but really isn’t suitable to the beginning welder, sheetmetal worker, or tool and die hobbiest. It would be best for the person who wants to make historic replica items from a forge who one who wishes to supplement historical replica woodworking with some basic metal work in brass or iron/steel.

Players Option Spells and Magic Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition Rulebook 2163

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Reward’s for being creative.
I was searching for a way to create magical items with a mage and picked up this book and found it defines this and more. I was able to hunt for magical components and this book helped with the research factor.

I wanted to find a few off-the-wall components and this book helped to define a good way to do that. It was helpful in answer magic related questions about Mages and what an Enchanter is good for or an Invoker. This book is a must if you plan of playing or running Mages, it is very helpful.

4 Stars Good book with spells and NWPs galore!
Spells & Magic is a good, well-written, fairly well organized book packed with spells for both wizards and preists, along with numerous NWPs.

5 Stars Unique in the good way
Unlike “Skills and Powers” and “Combat and Tactics”, “Spells and Magic” does not introduce a wholly new set of rules that the other two books in the series are infamous for. “Spells and Magic” so rarely deviates from the original rules and presents so much expanded materials ( rather than totally new), you will soon be immersed into the originality of the effort. While this is basically a second take on The Complete Wizard’s Handbook, it accomplished its goals so much better and quicker that it has plenty of leftover space to introduce several new subdivisions of the magic-user class and many other useful innovations. My advise as for Spells and Magic? Opt for this rules expansion - steer clear of its comrades.

5 Stars Very good book for all types of Spellcasters
This book is a great source of information for any type AD&D game, this book includes detailed info about all types of Spellcasters and includes too the system of Character Point’s already seen in the Player Option’s:Skills&Powers but expanded and woth more option’s this time for all Spellcaster. There is a system that you can create your own spellcaster type and almost create a new class, by choosing it advantages, disadvantages special powers and special traits. The books also include a system and a table of critical hit caused by magic. The book is very interisting and very good it worth the price you pay. Get it if you can.

5 Stars A necessary book to spells casters
The new spells and the new rules of this book made the mechanics of the game more realist and more “playable”. An important acquisition for every spellcaster and most adventurers.

The Big Book of Weekend Woodworking: 150 Easy Projects (Big Book of … Series)

1 Star DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE I MADE. DON’T BUY THIS BOOK!
This is not the book you think it is. This description is wrong. This is a little book. This is not the one you want. Get the book that shows the brownish/beige cover (same title and author). I was very upset and had to reorder.

5 Stars Outstanding!
Excellent resource for basic information on making wood signs for various purposes, using several technologies - router, scroll saw, sand-blasting, etc. Whether you’re just making signs for yourself or thinking of going into business, the “how-to’s” are clear and well illustrated.

5 Stars Excellent Book
Making Wood Signs is an excellent book for the hobbiest and average woodworker alike. Very well written with many photos to help anyone getting started in sign making. ~Paul S.

5 Stars Making Wood Signs
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in signs. I rate the book the best Spielman has written on this subject to date.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Scrimshaw Techniques
Jim has put together a great book for new and old scrimers, I thought i knew it all but i’ve picked up a few usable tips. he starts from the begining talking about the equipment used then the diferent ivory and where to get it, then in detail how to scrimshaw. He is easy to follow and the pictures help a lot. Jim knows his stuff. the gallery is great, lots of colour picks. A must for all scrimers and collectors. This book will become a collectors item. Regards Rod Lacey

5 Stars Beautiful book with lots of good information.
The book displays an abundance of impressive and beautiful pieces. A great book for anyone’s coffee table. But, I think more important, is the variety of subjects and techniques displayed. I found it inspirational– gave me the urge go over to my workbench, grab my pin-vise, and start poking some holes. I may never be able to do as well as some of the artists who did these things, but their work gives me lots of ideas about how I might improve my scrimshanding.

YF 23 Advanced Fighter 1 48 scale model

YF 23 Advanced Fighter 1 48 scale model

The Northrop/McDonnell Douglas YF-23 was a prototype fighter aircraft designed for the United States Air Force. It was entered in the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program in the early 1980s, but lost out to the Lockheed YF-22, which entered production as the F-22 Raptor. Two YF-23 prototypes were designed and built by Northrop and McDonnell Douglas as part of the demonstration and evaluation phase of the ATF selection program, which concluded in 1990. One prototype was powered by twin Pratt and Whitney YF119 turbofan engines, while the other was installed with two General Electric YF120 turbofan engines. The YF-23 employed stealth characteristics and was capable of supersonic cruise flight without afterburner. The aircraft achieved a speed of Mach 1.8 during the program. There was no official USAF nickname for the YF-23A, thus the Northrop YF-23A team personnel chose the name

Making Birdhouses Easy and Advanced Projects Dover Books on Woodworking and Carving

Easy-to-follow instructions and diagrams for building dozens of attractive, practical birdhouses — from a one-room house for bluebirds to a forty-two-room structure for purple martins. Also contains a supplement with easy projects for novices, among them houses made from such common objects as gourds, flower pots, and tin cans. 56 plates; 4 figures.

User Ratings and Reviews

2 Stars alaska birds
Haven’t built any of the house yet. Got it so my order would be over XX$ to get free shipping. Has some good ideas & plans. Will probably build a purple martin hose close to one in the book.

4 Stars Easy does Not mean for Beginners
This is a great book if you already know how to read drawings, but no step-by-step instruction are included in the individual plans. What it does have is a lot of great ideas and information, such as how to build a hinged pole to make cleaning easy and what size hole to bore for the type of bird you want to nest. The drawings illustrate how to make the birdhouses easy to clean and maintain, as well as dimensions for each part. If you have made at least half a dozen woodworking projects, you can make the “easy” birdhouses. If you are an intermediate level woodworker, you can make the “advanced” projects.
